Institutional Research at Washington State University

The Office of Institutional Research is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and distributing data and information related to the general operation of the institution. Institutional research works with data from a wide variety of areas, including information related to students, faculty, programs, personnel, facilities, and finance. (A more detailed description of the areas we cover is available by following the Data link.)

The primary role of Institutional Research is to present an accurate representation of the institution, and assist with institutional strategic planning, decision making, problem solving, and ongoing operations. IR also plays a role in helping internal and external constituents understand the structure, makeup, and mission of the university overall.

IR strives to deliver consistent, reliable, and accurate data and information to its internal and external customers and constituents on a timely and regular basis. IR works to incorporate the latest data gathering, reporting, and presentation techniques to make data and information as accessible and meaningful as possible. The department also monitors higher education for trends that will affect the institution.

The IR department makes every effort to assure the accuracy of the data it collects and distributes. The department respects and guards individual privacy. In most cases, only aggregate data that cannot be traced to the those from whom it was collected are shared. Occasionally, and only for official university business, data specific to individuals are shared, but is done so within the guidelines of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

While the IR staff works to satisfy reasonable data requests from anyone inside or outside of the institution, our main priority is to provide information and analysis for key administrative positions at the university, including the president’s office, budget office, department deans, and university relations. We also spend a significant amount of time satisfying the data demands of external groups, such as the state legislature, state and federal agencies, and media.
